RUNNING ECONOMY TESTING
Running economy refers to the amount of oxygen required to run at a specified speed, the faster an athlete can run at a lower oxygen uptake is a significant performance advantage that is trainable. For this test, we use both respiratory gas exchange and blood lactate sampling at submaximal (below the anaerobic threshold) speeds to assess running economy and how to implement strategies to improve it.
Assessing running economy measures aerobic and anaerobic energy system contributions, guiding targeted training for running and neuromuscular development. Additionally, factors like body composition, biomechanics, and training regimen impact running economy, with a combination of endurance, neuromuscular, and strength training shown to improve it, offering potential gains for runners at all levels of performance.
